I think I'll go for a walk

Path

Moments after I took this photo with my phone, I took a different photo with my point & shoot camera, and then immediately, and accidentally, erased all the photos off the camera's card.

I didn't lose anything particularly valuable, except for all the photos I had just spent 15 minutes of my lunch break taking. But I also knew that if I had any chance of recovering those photos, I couldn't take any more photos on that card. Which meant I couldn't go back and try to re-create all the photos I had taken and erased. Oy.

So yes, I admit it: even those of us who think that we know what we're doing screw up sometimes. But I also know that you can ALWAYS recover accidentally deleted photos from a photo card. The camera doesn't actually delete the files, it just wipes out the list of file names. Just don't take any more photos on that card, or you risk writing over the old ones hiding on there.

When you get back to a computer, google around for a file uneraser or photo-card recovery tool. You should be able to find one free or very cheap. I saved all the photos from my card using Exif Untrasher, a free Mac app, and it only cost me $0 and a bit of a nuisance.
