Peachy
It has been ten years since we moved to San Francisco from Chicago. One of the things I miss most about the Midwest is the summer fruit. California has fantastic produce, but I have yet to get a peach as good as the Michigan peaches we bought at roadside stands during the steamy summers there.
While we were in the Sacramento Valley last weekend we bought about twelve pounds of just-picked peaches off the back of a farmer's pickup truck. These peaches are goooood. But we'll never eat them all before they go bad, so I canned about a dozen of them and got five pint jars of peach halves. I've never canned whole fresh fruit before (I've only chopped or mashed it up for jam or chutney) so it was a bit of an adventure. But the resulting honey-spice peach halves are quite tasty. And they are just like... canned peaches. Except more tender and a little less fake-tasting than the ones that come chopped up in fruit cocktail.
Dave asked if he could have one perched on a heap of cottage cheese, but I'm thinking these would go better with vanilla ice cream. No maraschino cherries will be involved.
