Glass in motion

Chihuly sculptures at the de Young

I took my parents to the Chihuly exhibition at the de Young museum here in San Francisco today. The final gallery in the exhibit was like a "best of" rehash. It featured a low platform covered with maybe a hundred pieces of mixed glass sculpture just like all the other stuff we had seen separated into groups in different galleries. My mom said it was like they threw everything they had left over into the last room. I thought it was like the finale of a fireworks show -- a little bit of everything all at once in a not-so-subtle explosion of color.

Oooooh, I'm so jealous- I love Chihuly's work! I think it really shows best when it's in the 'jumble' you describe for the photo above, even though I think Dale means for it to be in those little matching onesies and twosies you see everywhere else.

Someday when I am silly-rich I'm going to get myself a proper collection of Chihuly glass and a super-secure viewing room where my cats can't knock it over and break it. In the meantime I will have to be content with salivating over pictures, or maybe I'll be one of those groupies who steal his broken pieces from behind his studio in Seattle.
