Dealing

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm generally not in too much pain, just getting grumpier by the hour as I learn what I can and can't do.
My left hand cannot bear any weight or do any sort of grasping or holding without a jolt of pain. I can push buttons, hook light objects with a finger, and type, sort of.
Things which are very difficult or impossible to do with just my right hand:
Put my hair in a ponytail.
Unscrew anything remotely childproof, including pill bottles.
Wash dishes (or anything else).
Floss.
Get dressed and undressed. (Bra hooks present a particular challenge.)
Trim fingernails on my right hand.
The hospital people gave me a cast shield which allows me to shower, thank God. It's like a giant vinyl oven mitt with a very tight opening.
Dave set up the bike trainer for me (since I sure couldn't do it myself with one hand). Tomorrow I will try a short, upright ride. My heart is filled with dread. But maybe slightly less dread than if I were looking at riding outside in the rain.

Ahh, love. I've been there - I broke my hand, actually, which meant that I couldn't write, and couldn't do any of the things that you're barred from doing. You'll be OK - I'm sure of it - and you're also far better of an athlete than I am, and far more determined. You'll make the triathlon, and you'll do quite well, I'm sure.
I didn't have to cope with bra straps, though. Hmm... I see your point. ;)
may we suggest: braless? what about sports bras? grrr - bra straps be damned. see you soon :) M
the cast i had from my knee to my toes 13 years ago was exactly the same color!! i was also fortunate enough to have a sports med doctor (not part of australia's socialized med system, unfortunately, so cost me a bundle) who put gortex under the cast so that i could shower with it on. groovy.
i don't s'pose we'll be allowed to decorate your cast with your trusted sharpie-on-a-string??

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope you heal quickly!
